General Douglas MacArthur’s Telegram of Condolence

Above is a scan of General Douglas MacArthur’s short but powerful telegram to Jackie Kennedy sent on the day of her husband’s assassination. The then 82 year old General of the Army, had earlier that year been asked by President Kennedy to help mediate a dispute of athletic unions which threatened the US’ participation in the 1964 Olympics.  A deal was brokered and was one of the last acts of the ailing general who like Kennedy had served in the Pacific Theatre during World War Two.
