Winchester Model 1895
The first Winchester repeater to have a 4 or 5 box magazine instead of the traditional under barrel tube magazine and arguably the last major design development of the lever action rifle.
The Winchester 1895 has a thicker breach block to cope with the higher pressures of heavy calibre ammunition, the rifle was available in half a dozen calibres including Winchester .30-30, British .303 and .30-06. The rifle was a favourite of Theodore Roosevelt, Winchester customised several for him, because of its power and accuracy.
In 1898 Roosevelt privately purchased and equipped the officers of his Rough Riders with Winchester 1895s while the US army never adopted the rifle for service the Imperial Russian Army purchased 300,000 rifles between 1915 and 1917. They were also extremely popular among Pancho Villa’s men during the Mexican Revolution.
